Couple enjoying vacation thanks to buying new hearing aids to treat their hearing loss.

When venturing out to your favorite destination you will need to put steps in place to protect your hearing aid investment. It would be nice if all vacations were stress-free, but unfortunately, that’s often not the way it goes. Taking precautions to take care of your hearing aids will give you one less thing to be stressed about while going on vacation. What type of special handling do your hearing aids need while you are on vacation?

There Are Some Basics Things You Can do

You’ll need a thoroughly packed cleaning kit, for starters. Everything you do at home to keep your hearing aids clean, you’ll want to do while you go on vacation. Most quality hearing aid brands come with or offer a specialized cleaning kit that includes a brush or pick. It’s a prudent idea to bring a case for storage and a soft cleaning cloth.

It’s a good idea to bring replacement batteries, also. You will probably wear your hearing aid more than usual so backups are a good idea. If your hearing aids have rechargeable batteries, bring along an extra charger, too. Your additional charger should be put somewhere separate just in case one gets misplaced.

Here are some other items you may want to bring along:

  • Tubing
  • Soft domes
  • Sport clip

A checklist is essential so that you can be certain that you don’t forget something you may really need. An easy to access place should be selected to pack your hearing aid supplies in. Carry on luggage is the best spot to keep these items when you are going on a plane.

Have Your Hearing Aids Professionally Cleaned and Checked

One week prior to going bring your hearing aids in for an expert tune-up. Properly functioning hearing aids will make traveling safer and more pleasant. Ask your retailer about any warranties you have on the hearing aids and take any paperwork with you in case something goes wrong. Learn how to file a claim or else you may miss something and you could void your warranty.

It won’t hurt to ask if there is a retailer close to where you will be staying, too. Or research hearing aid repair or retailers on your own. This way you know where to go if you need a quick service, a new battery or even a replacement hearing aid.

Using Hearing Aids at The Airport

With all of the changing security criteria, going to the airport is often confusing. The first thing you need to be aware of is to wear your hearing aids while walking through the security checkpoints. As you approach the security officers, advise them that you are wearing a hearing aid. If you follow the security agent’s instruction you most likely won’t have to take them out to walk through the metal detector.

You are also allowed to use your hearing aids aboard the airplane. Normally, you might be required to shut off cell phones and mobile devices when taking off but your hearing aid can stay on. When on the plane, your hearing aid may not work as well. If you are having a hard time hearing, use visual hints to let people know. Cupping your ear, for example, sends a signal that you don’t understand.

A Drying Kit or Dehumidifier is a Good Idea

Vacations often go hand in hand with water fun and humidity. Even if you don’t plan to go swimming, that doesn’t mean humidity is still not a potential problem. A dryer is very important while on vacation and also all year round.

Learn About How Your Hearing Aids Work

Some features work better in one kind of setting, other features work better in a different kind of environment. In a crowded restaurant for example, or at an amusement park, you will need to filter out background noise. Some have outdoor settings that will make the beach more fun. But you have to be familiar with how your hearing aid works if you want to take advantage of these features.

Bring a Remote Microphone

A remote microphone will be convenient in noisy environments, when driving in the car, or if you are on a plane. When you are talking with someone, clip the mic to them and you will be able to hear them better.

Call Ahead to The Resort or Hotel

Usually, popular vacation venues accommodate for the hearing impaired. You’ll want to take advantage of that since you won’t be using your hearing aids at night. Smoke alarms which shake the bed or flash bright lights should be available. Find out if they have special phones for the hearing impaired and televisions with closed captioning.

Traveling is fun, but it can also be frantic, too. Get your hearing aids situated before you go, so you can relax and enjoy your trip. Schedule an appointment for a tune-up today.
